Preliminary model for the suspended labyrinth at Mariposa Studio. |

What? "Suspended Labyrinth" A new installation piece in the form of a labyrinth suspended from the ceiling of the Mariposa Studio. Not a "maze" but a clear path in and out; meant to clarify, focus, not confuse. A compelling structure with theatrical possibilities. Walk into a painting. Participants will find themselves along a path of changing planes, spatial awareness, and viewpoints. See Design for more on the process. Who? The project is the work of performer and visual artist Anna Dal Pino. Collaborating with Anna are lighting/ labyrinth consultant KT Graham, and choreographer/director John LeFan. A host of local artists also bring their talents to play with this piece as set: dance, poetry, song, music. For more about the principal collaborators, please see About Us. Where? The work is designed for the Mariposa Studio in San Francisco. The Mariposa Studio is a proving ground for experimentation and collaboration in theater, dance and visual arts. It is located at 2808 Mariposa Street in the Project Artaud complex. When? The full-scale installation will be completed in February 2009. The labyrinth will be in place for a five-week run, when events will include various opportunities to walk the path and view performance. Please visit Calendar for more information. How? The Suspended Labyrinth project is made possible entirely by the generous donations of individuals and organizations. To make a donation, please visit Donate. |
| Artist's Statement by Anna Dal Pino My visual work expresses a sense of movement and perspective with a tactile quality. My current work is in the exploration of organic forms. My installation takes this a step further by providing a context for people to move through. An opportunity to be and experience art at once. The piece is in the form of a suspended labyrinth. By changing the planes of a traditional labyrinth, it plays with contrasts in space and perception: expansion/ contraction, confinement/ freedom, viewer/ participant. It will also be used as a set for a physical theater piece, incorporating sound, movement and spoken word. |
